Fictional Characters?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 8989

They all made various noises of disappointment and frustration upon realizing that the TARDIS, too, had vanished into the whiteness of the void... All except for the brown-haired Betty, who was standing there silently with an intense look of puzzled concentration on her face. Suddenly, she shouted "Fiction!"

They all turned startled expressions on her. "That's it!" she continued triumphantly. "The Land of Fiction! That's the episode!"

The other Betty snapped her fingers. "'The Mind Robber!'" she exclaimed. "Of course! That was a good episode..."

"Would you mind explaining what you're talking about?" asked Stacy irritably.

"Yes," snarled the Master. "If you have useful information, please do be so good as to impart it to us!"

"OK," said the dark-haired Betty. "I'm a bit fuzzy on the details, like I -- like she -- said, but basically they had somehow ended up in this strange place where fictional characters and creatures had taken on a soild reality. It was all powered by some guy's imagination, you see..."

"Not really," Stacy muttered, but the second Betty broken in: "What I don't understand is, wasn't the Land destroyed at the end of the episode? How could it exist now?"

"Maybe it hasn't happened yet. Maybe we've arrived before that episode took place," said brown-haired Betty.

"I think I'm getting a headache," Stacy muttered. But the Master was actually nodding as if this made some sense to him. Maybe he's just humoring them, Stacy thought, one nutcase to another...

"Anyway," said red-headed Betty. "We don't know that that's where we are. There could be lots of featureless white voids in the universe. Uh, universes."

"Uh-huh," said Stacy. "So, how do we tell?"

"Well, do you see any fictional characters?" asked brown-haired Betty. Then she stopped and looked carefully at the others, who, after all, included a villian from one of her favoirite science fiction shows and an alternate version of herself she clearly remembered creating in an online interactive game. "Uh, never mind. Stupid question."

"Well, fictional or not, here comes someone, at any rate," said the Master. And sure enough, a figure was approaching them through the white nothingness.

  1. It was the Doctor!
  2. It was Melissa!
  3. "Geez, it is a fictional character!" cried Stacy, recognizing the figure.
  4. "Well, there's our fictional character," said both Bettys, recognizing the figure.
  5. "My goodness," said the Master, apparently recognizing the figure. "It is a fictional character."
  6. It was no one any of the recognized, fictional or not.
