There was no point of reference in the empty whiteness to tell them how
far away Melissa was. Thus it was
only when she got quite near to them that they realised that she was still
only the twelve inches or so high that she had been when she had
disappeared from
the TARDIS. [8488] The mouths of Stacy and the two Bettys dropped open in
astonishment,
and even the Master raised an eyebrow. "What on Earth happened to you?"
asked Stacy.
"He pulled me out of the TARDIS and brought me here," said Melissa. The loudness of her voice had reduced in approximately the same ratio as her height, so they had to listen carefully. "He apologised about my shrinking, but he said it was an unavoidable side effect. He brought me here because he said my 'trail' would create a path of least resistance across the universes which the TARDIS would almost certainly follow."
