"He," replied Melissa, her voice sounding vague and unfocused, as if she
had been drugged. "The master of this place." The Master's mouth quirked
slightly, as if he were amused (or perhaps annoyed) at the idea of someone
stealing his chosen self-designation. Melissa went on, "He needed people,
he said..." Her voice trailed off into nothingness. Betty-2 looked concerned. "Melissa? Are you all right?" "Of course she's not all right!" exclaimed Stacy. "Look at her! She's twelve inches tall!" "Come with me, please," said Melissa, still sounding strange. "I must take you to him." They all looked at each other. Betty-1 shrugged and said, "Well, it's not like we've got anything better to do." The others nodded, and Melissa smiled and led them on across the void.
