When Astra came round and opened her eyes, it was just as dark as it had
been with them
closed. Wherever she might be, she was obviously not going anywhere else,
since she was securely
chained to the wall. Astra sighed. Her taste of freedom had only lasted an
hour or two. At least they were very long chains, so that she had a good
deal of freedom of movement.
She called out softly: "Ardua? Are you there?" "Yes. Can you see anything?" "No, it's pitch black." "That's a relief. I was wondering if I had gone blind. Where are we?" "How should I know?" grumbled Astra. "I've only just come round. We seem to be in someone's dungeon, but whether it's the dragon's or someone else's I've no idea. Presumably it belongs to whoever set the gas trap. I should have been more cautious about opening it. After all, why would someone leave a chest of drawers in a place like that, especially when there was that weird rod in it." They were silent for a while. Then Ardua asked: "Can you hear anything? It sounds like running water." It was. A moment later Astra felt it lapping around her feet. It got deeper, slowly but steadily. After half an hour they were waist deep. At least the water was warm; they might drown, but they wouldn't freeze to death.
