The Never Ending Quest - Episode 119238

And thus, those puppies became the only thing Gigi ever thought about.

They were rightfully human. They were her children. She should be rocking them to sleep and singing them lullabies and breastfeeding them and getting giddy over their first teeth and cooing over them and giving them nice warm cradles to sleep in... but instead they were dogs, living somewhere as pets being taught nothing, made to sleep in cages, and she didn't even know if they were together. She had to find them. She had to. If she could restore them to humanity, even if she couldn't raise them, even if she was a cocker spaniel owned by Regon for the rest of her life, she would gladly do it. Nothing mattered more now.

Her belly no longer sagged low when she walked, but that part wasn't so bad really - she'd only been a pregnant dog for a couple weeks. No, it was the knowing that she was alone. She'd had her babies with her every second of every day for seven years. She was miserable, and often whined in the night - until one night Regon was annoyed by it and ordered her never to make a single sound when he was sleeping or trying to sleep.

She got to know her way around town as Regon gave her several notes and small items to deliver to and pick up from various shopkeepers, and they always cooed at her, telling her how sweet and cute and "good" she was, and giving her treats. Dignity was out the window. Sometimes she was just not in the mood and growled at these people, but one day Regon said, "Forsyth told me you tried to bite her. I will not have you treating anyone I do business with badly. Improve your attitude at once. Wag your tail, get excited, hop around like a normal dog."

The next few weeks were exhausting to the point of unhealthiness, and Regon toned down the orders, but she still found spasms of happiness and excitement hitting her at random multiple times a day. During this time, she would bark moderately, wag her tail constantly, lick the hands of whomever was near. The episodes were always over after a few minutes, and she would quickly become resentful, but since all aggression had been ordered out of her all she did was withdraw to be by herself. Regon seemed pleased with the arrangement.

He always gave her strict time limits on all her tasks, told her not to get sidetracked by anything, and gave her a specific route, one which never took her anywhere near her former home. She was explicitly forbidden from hurting or malnourishing herself, approaching anyone she'd known as a human, or taking shortcuts.

And in the meantime, Regon continued his experiments. He never told her about them or let her see them. She found herself hoping desperately for his success, so that this could all be over - so she'd have a chance of being released and tracking down her babies. But she had no idea how his progress was going. She needed to know. She needed him to be done so she could find her children.

  1. After six months, he began to get ready to go on a trip, presumably related to his mission. Gigi would be coming with him.
  2. After six months, he began to get ready to go on a trip, presumably related to his mission. Gigi would be staying shut up in the house.
  3. After a year, Hannah and Henry's oldest surviving son, now almost 18, showed up at Regon's door, angrily and somewhat drunkenly accusing him of having done something to his mother.
  4. After two years, Gigi began to show signs of progressive retinal atrophy, and slowly began to lose her sight.
  5. After three years, Regon abruptly and intensively began to train Gigi as a hunting dog.
