The dog blinked, shaking her head, and was disconcerted by the feeling of her long ears flapping around with the motion. "Now," said Regon firmly, "sit." Fred's rump dropped immediately to the floor. She whimpered in alarm. "Shake," commanded Regon, holding out his hand. Fred shifted a bit to place her paw in Regon's palm. It felt so useless compared to a hand equipped with five fingers... "Roll over." Fred was now ready enough to attempt to resist, but she couldn't, not at all; she immediately dropped down and rolled over, ending again on her belly. "Play dead." She rolled over once more, ending with all four of her paws stuck uncomfortably in the air, her back to the floor. "Stay," came Regon's voice, and she did, not moving, awaiting the next command with dread - but it didn't come. Regon left her there. She waited with increasing discomfort until she heard him, now across the room from her, begin to mutter arcane words under his breath. He was casting the petrification spell! She couldn't even see it! She tried to will herself to move, but her body would not cooperate. She remained there for several minutes, until at last, Regon reentered her field of vision, squatting next to her. "Fortunately," he said to her, "you can still, in many ways, act as my assistant. I'll have to write more notes, but you can deliver them, simply as a well-trained little mongrel. And I shall no longer have to pay you." He shook his head. "It really didn't have to come to this, but I can certainly make it work. And Gigi, it would be wise not to fight the magic. If you are beautifully cooperative, I may free you after I have successfully rid the land of the dragon. You should count yourself lucky that's even still on the table, considering your treachery." The poor little dog was in despair, but she perked up at this last part. Free? But would she still be a dog? She had no way to ask, but it seemed total cooperation was really her best and only chance... The days began to pass, and she became used to the new routine. She hated that Regon had taken away her form and her free will, but at least, at least he wasn't cruel. He gave her a few rags to sleep on and plenty of meat to eat. The only time she fought back in those first few days was when Henry came round to check on her. Regon told her to go into the next room, and she did, because she had no choice, but as soon as she heard Henry ask if Regon knew where Hannah was, she began barking up a storm. Regon scolded her and ordered her not to eat for the rest of the day. She didn't really hear most of his interaction with her husband, but she doubted he could have any clue what might have happened to her.
