Did Ted save your life out of kindness? If so, isn't he in the wrong line
of work for one who is so tender-hearted? But you can't think of a better
explanation.
You wait for the bandits to leave. But before they do, you feel a strange lethargy stealing over you. Could Ted have somehow cast a sleeping spell on you? He didn't seem like the type to be a magic user, though. Or could the noxious water of the ditch be giving off some gas that is a natural soporific - or possibly even something life-threatening? The only consolation is that you are lying in a position where there is little risk of your head slipping beneath the water, so you shouldn't drown. When you wake up, it is a beautiful sunny morning, in sharp contrast to the rain of last night. Since you have awoken, you guess that whatever rotting process was producing the noxious vapor must have used up all of its raw material. You heave yourself out of the ditch, something that takes quite a bit of effort, as your velvet gown - heavy with mud and water - seems like it weighs a ton. There is no sign of either the merchant or the coachman. You assume that the coachman must have come round long ago and the two of them then set off to walk to the nearest village. If they looked in the ditch, they would have assumed that Ted had told the truth when he said that you were dead, as a casual glance would not have told them that you were alive. The overturned coach still lies in the road, but when you look inside you see that the robbers and the merchant between them have left nothing of use behind. Seeing no alternative, you start walking along the dirt road in the direction that the coach had been heading, making a squelching sound with every step. Before long:
