"Ah, and why not, m'lady?" said Amergin, pulling himself up from the
ground. "Do I cut too sorry and poor a figure for your fine tastes?"
"No, no!" Sarah laughed. "It's not that! It's just that..." She sighed. "I thank you for the offer. but I fear I'd not be a pleasant companion for you. Or you for me. I - I would have great difficulty abiding your music." "Oh - this, m'lady?" Amergin asked, smiling and strumming his harp again. Sarah found this final straw too much to take. "How is that you are a bard, Amergin?" she nearly shouted. "How do you survive as one? Playing nothing - nothing but trite patterns in the Ionian mode! Renaissance madrigals, Gregorian chants...did they never exist in this world of yours?" Amergin was taken aback. "M'lady - I apologize if I've offended you..." Sarah realized she'd made something of an overstep. "No, no," she replied, trying to remedy the rapidly disintegrating situation. "I was in the wrong, Amergin - it was wholly unnecessary -" "But you do think that of my music, do you not?" Sarah was forced to nod. Amergin smiled sadly. "As do most men who hear it, it would seem." He gave a short laugh. "No, m'lady Sarah - whatever else you may think of this world, fear not for our music. ‘Tis in far better hands than mine." Sarah managed a smile, but did not speak for several seconds. "If - if you'll still have me, Amergin, I'll gladly come with you," she said at last. "I've not much else to turn to. I need help, I need a guide through this place. I promise I'll keep my silence about your music. It won't disturb me." Amergin smiled. "I'll gladly have you, m'lady. And I'll try to refrain from the harp while you're with me. Now -- if you want, there's a town not many parthons from here. We can reach it by nightfall, if you'd like a room and a bed."
