“Yes, parthons. A distance of 4,000 devins –"
“Like a mile?” Sarah asked. He shrugged. “Is that your world’s main unit of distance?” She nodded. “5,280 feet – not that that would mean much to you either.” She suddenly stopped short. “Amergin! I just realized…how am I even understanding you at all? How are you understanding me? Why isn’t every word complete nonsense? What’s going on?” But as she said the words, she realized the answer. There was a pull – ever so slight – in the back of her head. She instinctively raised her hand to feel it. She realized this “pulling” must have been happening all along. She’s been distracted, though – and it was possible to ignore the sensation if your mind was preoccupied with other things. Now, though, her entire attention was riveted on it. “Amergin,” she said slowly, her eyes closed, her face tight with concentration, “I am talking – trying this right now – I think you’ve got be listening to me – as an experiment – trying to see – there’s a pull in my mind – good lord this is strange! Yes – certainly a pull – translates stuff, I think –” Sarah finally opened her eyes. She shook her back and forth for a moment, trying to reorient herself. “Good lord that’s strange,” she said again. “What’s doing it, Amergin? Do you know? Oh, great – there it’s going again –“ “Well, m’lady,” he began – “Wait! No—don’t! Keep talking!” “Are you all right, m’lady?” “Yes, yes – just keep talking. You’re making it happen too, talking to me like this. That’s all.” “I would think, m’lady,” he continued, glancing concernedly at her, “that it’s a form of unconscious magic.” “Unconscious?” Sarah asked, bringing her attention back to him. “Like subconscious? Or instinctive? Like an involuntary muscle of some sort?” “I’m not familiar with some of those terms…” he said. “Never mind,” she said. “You’ve not had your William Harveys and Sigmund Freuds yet, I’d guess.” She sighed. “Or a Schoenberg or Weber or Ives either, I suppose.”
