Post-tonal Music History

The Black Void - Episode 675

“Them?” Sarah pursed her lips. “Harvey was a scientist – did at lot with anatomy, I think. Freud’s a psychoanalyst. Studied how our minds worked. And Schoenberg and Weber and Ives and Boulez…and some of Wagner and Debussy and Stravinsky…” Sarah felt a shiver run through her. “They’re composers. Musicians. Who completely reshaped music theory with their post-tonal theories."

“You…admire them, I take it?”

“Admire them? Good lord yes! I’d wish with every bone of my body to be remembered among them! It’s hard music, it’s not “pretty music” – it’s difficult for the ear to grasp. But when you understand the philosophy and structure behind it – the genius of the twelve-tone-row, for instance! It’s a whole new plateau of understanding.”

“You’re a musician as well, then?”

She nodded. “A composer. Though there’s not much employment for us atonal stylists.”

Amergin smiled. “The public does not care for your music, either, I take it?”

Sarah smiled back in spite of herself. “Are you insulting me, sir? But it’s unfortunately true. Not quite for the same reasons that your music fails, of course. We’ve at least got intricate theory and flawless technique on our side. But in the end…we don’t exactly get bread on the table either.”

Amergin pondered this for a moment, then glanced up at the sky. “M’lady – it’s well past midday. If you want to reach the villiage, you’d best come quickly.”

Sarah started to follow him, then stopped short. “Is that where you were planning to head?”

Amergin delayed a moment before answering.

“I am headed west, m’lady. The next city in that direction there is 300 parthons distant. This village to the east is scarcely three.”

“So I’d be making you retrace your steps if we went back there?”

Amergin dismissed her objection. “It’s not a delay in the least, m’lady. It’s hardly half a day’s distance. I’ll find you help and rest there, then continue on my way.”

  1. “All right, then…as long as you don’t mind. I am rather lost and tired.”
  2. “You’re going to leave me there? No way! I’m coming with you. To the west!”
  3. “Hold on a minute. Why are you going that direction?
