Sarah told her story. When she had finished, Amergin looked rather confused. "I don't know what a mall is, or who this Santa might be," he said. "Or indeed where this Manhattan that you say that you come from can be found. But if I understand you aright, you are saying that you used to be a human being."

"Well of course I used... Wait a minute. What do you mean: 'used to be'?"

"Feel your ears."

"Huh? Oh, all right. If it will make you happy."

Sarah ran her hands over her ears. Their tips were pointed!

"Ohmigod, I'm an elf! I can't believe it! How is this possible? But I thought that elves were tiny creatures?"

"Whatever gave you that idea? Elves are on average no different in height from humans."

"So what am I going to do now? I'm beginning to get a nasty feeling that there's no way that I'm ever going to be seeing Manhattan again."

  1. "I'm sorry, but I've no idea what you should do."
  2. "Well, I would welcome a travelling companion."
  3. "The legends say that the Golden Wood is not very far away from here, where the lady Galadriel and the lord Celeborn rule. You might go there, if you want to find some of your own people."
