Amergin: the not so informed Bard!

The Black Void - Episode 214

Note: taken in part from episode 193 by Josh Bieber. Not meant to be a tie in with another story thread elsewhere. Rather, this is an exploration of events and consequences AFTER the main story characters of that other story thread move onto other things.

Sarah said "Well, if the Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn can get me back to my own people in Manhattan, then that is where we should go. How do I get to the Golden Wood?"

Amergin paused when the word "Manhattan" came up. "The Golden Wood is on the other side of the mighty River Anduin. Once you cross the river, there is no known path that leads to Lord Celeborn."

"You know more about this area than I do, Amergin. Why don't we go together?" suggested Sarah.

"Great, a travelling companion," sang the Bard. "I would love that. Let's go." As he walked, he started playing his harp. And he began to sing.

Let's march towards the Mighty Anduin
Which meanders towards the seven seas
And goes by the Golden Wood of Lothlorien
Where there grow lots of Mallorn Trees

Sarah had no idea what the bard was singing about. And she was not sure she wanted to hear the bard singing any further as the music bothered her.

As you know the unexpected has a habit of happening at the oddest time. This is no exception.

Sarah can tell that Amergin 's not very good at singing. Finds that he kind of . . .overdoes it with his songs. Cloying instead of sweet and that stuff?

Given time and practice he might have fixed that, but something happens that . . .changes everything. If Amergin was more up on current events he would have known that . . . there had been a war on! The War of the Ring or some such, but unfortunately he came from a remote province and . . . hadn't gotten the news. He'd left because it was so . . isolated and backwards, really. Taken up the adventure of being a Bard (recently) to see the wider world.

Yep, good on him but if he'd set off earlier and experienced the wider world he'd know that while those elven rulers he'd mentioned would perhaps be helpful, because of the war the aid might not be as forthcoming as quickly as normal, eh? Bigger fish to fry and all that.

Well, anyway . . .

Yes, he was aware of where the elves lived and all that. Who the current ruler was, so that was good on him. However, he wasn't aware of one thing that REALLY was going to rock his world (as it were) and almost every other civilized human being around here. Those who would be left (human wise) would soon come to be seen as a big of scourge as the orc . . . but that's here in a bit.

"The Event" first announced itself with the appearance of a new ghostly green star in the sky that would have been visible in the daytime sky (IF the elf and Bard had a clear view of the sky instead of the forest canopy above). Another clue probably would be this mysterious stranger (named "Inquirer") with a means of travel unknown to even those of the likes of Gandolf the White!

Soon enough, in lands far from here all Hell is breaking loose (as retold by that same mystery woman):

She soon leaves by means unknown, leaving quiet a mess behind. Our story continues turns back to Sarah and the Bard, though. That last part was just to explain why things happened the way they did.

The change, oddly enough, first begins to show in not Sarah the elf, but in the Bard!

  1. Sarah is just about to tell the bard to stop singing and lead her to the Golden Wood silently when the singer's voice . . . suddenly goes a couple of octaves UP!
