Luckily for Fred and Diana, an underground river ran under the balcony. (The hoard of treasure which the dragon was guarding lay on the river's far side.) They plunged into the water, which was icy cold. As the current bore them away, Fred heard Zenobia shout after them: "Do you think that you've escaped me? We'll see about that." Then he faintly heard what sounded like gibberish but was presumably an incantation.

  1. Fred is transformed into a merman and Diana into a mermaid.
  2. Fred and Diana are turned into a strange cross between humans and toads.
  3. But Fred and Diana are by now out of range of her spell, and so are unscathed.
  4. Because they are almost out of range, Fred is transformed but Diana is not.
  5. Because they are almost out of range, Diana is transformed but Fred is not.
