Presumably because they were so far away, the spell's effectiveness was limited, but it still worked somewhat. Fred felt his skin tingling horribly, but he knew they could not stop now, or they would surely be killed or turned into something awful. "Quick, under the water," he urged Diana, and they slipped underneath together. After a good deal of swimming, they emerged onto a bank in a deep forest. Diana immediately cried out in horror on seeing Fred, and though Fred tried, he could not keep himself from doing the same thing on seeing Diana: they had both been changed by Zenobia's spell. Their skin was brown like muddy water, rough and bumpy to the touch. All their hair had fallen out, they had no ears, their noses had halfway sunk into their faces, and their eyes were black like animals'. Their legs were obviously very, very strong, and there was webbing between their fingers and their toes. Fred was quite sure he had gotten smaller; his clothes felt four sizes too big. And last (but by far not least) was the enormous bulge at each of their throats; Fred could feel how long his tongue had become curled up inside it. Fred's reaction is not as calm as he might have liked...
