Instead of answering the question, Julie began, "Oh, officer, you don't know how glad we are to see you. You see..." And suddenly she was spilling the whole story. She spoke very calmly and rationally, but Stacy realized just how crazy the whole story was likely to sound.

1. The officer seemed doubtful, but at least he was listening to them seriously.
2. He obviously didn't believe them, however, and he seemed to be getting angry.
3. When Julie was finished, the man just laughed. "OK, an imaginative story like that deserves some reward. No ticket, this time."
4. He seemed to believe them... perhaps a little too easily, Stacy thought.
