"We can..." Stacy began, intending to say: "We can prove it." But then she broke off. Did she really want to show this policeman her transponder, given the place where it had been inserted? Of course, sooner or later she was going to have to show someone, but was this the right person and the right time and place?

  1. She decided that this was no time to be prudish, and to the policeman's amazement pulled down her slacks.
  2. She decided that the policeman probably still wouldn't believe their story. Better to wait until they could find someone with more expertise and authority.
  3. Apparently Julie had none of Stacy's reservations.
