As Julie kept rambling on with her story, Stacy looked back at the patrol
car and noticed the policeman's partner get out. He wrote something on
his notepad, then got back into the car. In a few seconds, he was out
again, talking on what appeared to be a two-way radio.
Stacy rolled down the window and tried to listen to the second policeman. It was a bit hard with Julie blabbering on, but she managed to catch a few words of the conversation. "Yes, Dr. Hooker...the license plate matches the one on the car you reported as being stolen an hour ago...I don't know, my partner's talking to them right now...yes, we'll send someone to pick you up..." Those last words sent a chill up Stacy's spine. After getting this far in the escape attempt, she didn't want to have to confront Hooker face-to- face knowing that she had failed. Stacy became even more frightened, though, when she heard the policeman Julie had been talking to say, "Hey, Mac, listen here. These ladies went through the same type of operation we did!" "Really? I would have never expected the theft of Hooker's car to be an inside job. Imagine how big of a promotion he's going to make Zimmermann give us after we cracked this case in all of one hour!" So Hooker has control over even the police in this town? thought Stacy. This is not good. The policeman named Mac talked a little softer into his two-way radio. Then he yelled to his partner, "Hooker says these two are vital to the project. We're to keep them in the car until he can get here. We're not to hurt or kill them in any way except as a last resort to prevent their escape, but he said it would be fine to use any of the knockout agents we've got stored in the trunk." Great, thought Stacy. This isn't good. From the look on Julie's face, she was thinking the same thing.
