Lt. Catters

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 5478

Leutenant Andrew Catters was both excited and nervous. He knew he would be in for a lot of trouble and adventure when he accepted assignment on the Conglomerate ship Behemoth. But he had never expected anything quite like this. The Conglomerate was a small coaltion of paralell Earths that had rebelled against the Alliance and had formed an independant government. Trapped between the Alliance and the Enemy, the Conglomerate was in a precarious state. They needed new sources of Tiberium, and there were few paralell Earths that had not already been mined by either the Alliance or the Enemy. So they decided to concentrate on exploring planets in their own universe rather than parallel Earths, and had built ships such as the Behemoth for that purpose.

Catters himself was the first officer of the Behemoth, the greatest of the Conglomerate ships, and the youngest person ever to serve as first officer of a great exploration ship, at only 20. It had been universally agreed to that he had a bright future ahead of him, as a captain himself.

But now, that future had a great danger of dying out. He had been placed in the precarious postion of leader of a relatively small group of civlilians who had been trapped on the Behemoth during the disaster. There was a good chance that the shuttles wouldn't make it to the nearest inhabited planet. The planet, a heretofore unexplored world which Catters had named Astra, was quite promising, and very habitable. But the distance between their current location and Astra was very long, and between them and Astra was a massive asteroid field that was very difficult to navigate. He had to find a navigable path through the asteroid field. If he failed, not only would he die, but so would all the civilians. But if he suceeded, he would make it, and his name would probably go down in history.

Catters' reverie was interrupted by a knock on the door. "Come in," he said. The person who came in was a beautiful woman about Catters' age, with long, flowing blonde hair and eyes of a very bright blue. It was the Behemoth's first contact advisor, Melody Dawson. Former first contatct advisor, Catters corrected himself, as the Behemoth crew was no more. She had come along in case Astra was inhabited. She was quite lovely, but was more than just decorative, she was also a very competent officer. She had a good understandign of alien cultures. Her relationship with Catters was strictly in the domain of friendship, although Catters had often wished that it were more personal. Captain Jans had initially had doubts about their ability to work together, as Catters had once fallen in love with an analog of her, who had married someone else. But Catters had gotten beyond his past, and they had worked together quite well, becoming friends in the process. "Hello," said Dawson. "You look pretty nervous."

"I sure am," said Catters. "I don't know if we'll be able to make it through that asteroid field."

"I think we may very well be able to make it," said Melody. "I am a little nervous, but I'm exicted too. We're building a new world."

"I have a bad feeling in my gut about this," said Catters.

"You always say that," said Dawson. "Loosen up."

"I can't afford to loosen up," said Catters. Then, "You're right. I do need to loosen up. I'm starting to sound like old Captain Jans."

Then, a transmission came in. It was the voice of Leutenant Matthew Williams, the pilot, barely out of the academy. Catters didn't know him very well, but he had heard that he was good at it. "This is Leutenant Williams here...

  1. We're coming in to the asteroid feild. Get your but out of there and help."
  2. "Something bad's just come up..."
