A Time for Rest

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 40073

“I must return wretched little Shiva to captivity. While I am gone, you will sleep.”

The grey cloud dissipated, and from it stepped an elderly man with knowing black eyes and a certain liveliness radiating from just beneath his frail exterior. The elaborate illusion of their surroundings shimmered away. Shiva had been tricked, they were in noneother than Vincent's black tower secreted away in the desert north. The necromancer was but many of the titles he'd acquired. “I must say, Shiva, that I admire your tenacity,” he said softly, pocketing the small flask that contained the essence of the Destroyer in one of the numerous pockets of his white lab coat. “If only you could use all that energy for something constructive for once, I might be able to rehabilitate you. But Destroying is all you know, and order is much harder to achieve than chaos.” He sighed tiredly.

Vincent snapped his fingers, and in trotted four gorillas of varying sizes and colors with one common trait; shiny metal toasters adorning their necks. “You know where to take them, my beloved children,” he told his creatures in his usual calm demeanor. “I’ll be back before you know it. Don’t let go of their leashes until they’re properly secured.

“Silly, persistent Shiva,” the mad doctor continued as he strolled leisurely through the maze of corridors that wound throughout his dark tower. “Did you really think I’d let you get away so easilly? Did you really think I’d unwittingly let two heroes of the magnitude of Fred and Astra just waltz into your prison to fulfill your dastardly destiny? It was all a simple test, my dear, wretched Shiva.” He chuckled as he felt a warmth building in the flask. “And still so easily angered. And yet, maybe there’s hope for you yet...”

Indeed, Dr. Priceless had a wonderful plan. Although he was using both Fred and Astra (God only knows how he'd conjured up Sweetness and Light) as unwilling pawns in his grand game of chess, he meant to put them to good use. If he could properly harness their destructive powers, he just might be able to rid the world of a few of the greater evils that plagued it. For Priceless, the ends justified the means. This had always been his greatest character flaw. But he could, perhaps, be forgiven. He loved life, and learning, and putting his knowledge of the universe to further the cause of humanity. Unfortunately this often meant that certain individuals were completely overlooked. It was highly unlikely that Fred or Astra would have voluntarily assumed the roles they now played.

After Shiva had been put back into her ancient prison, to brood for another century or so, Vincent took a small vacation to gather his thoughts. Using the Allarian Lord and Aqualarian Princess in the manner he did had been an almost last minute decision. That sneeze of Astra's was pure brilliance. Now that he had his new pets, he was unsure of where to begin his crusade. It was all a little daunting. He had a favorite little island in the southern seas he would frequent from time to time ( in other words, hardly ever), that had the most beautiful beaches. Perhaps he could kick back there for a week or so, while Death and Despair rested. Transporting himself there would be no problem, no problem at all. Yes, that sounded marvelous...

  1. The vacation was exactly what he'd needed. Not only was he able to gather his thoughts, but he also acquired a wonderful new tan. He returned to his tower more ready than ever to do his work...
  2. Unfortunately, while vacationing, the confinement he'd provided for his new pets turned out to be entirely inadeqaute...
