In Vincent's Absence

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 40087

For most of the week that Dr Vincent had been away, the four carnage beasts had been recuperating from their injuries, in quarters strongly protected by magic wards to ensure that they could not escape. Their wounds had been considerable, but they were able to heal remarkably fast, so that after five days they were almost as good as new.

For much of the time they had slept. When awake, they had eaten a lot of raw meat (they would have preferred live prey, but Vincent had not wanted them to get over-excited whilst he was away). From time to time they had copulated, either male with either female, as the fancy took them.

Towards the end of the week, without the voice of a master or a mistress booming in their minds, goading them on and drowning out any attempt at thought, unsettling fragmentary memories of a time when things had been different began to return to Death and Despair, though their intelligence was still not that much greater than a dog's.

  1. But shortly before Vincent was due to return, Despair had recovered enough memory and enough vocabulary to grate out: "Me once woman."
  2. Then Vincent got back.
