Fred thought that it was very strange that Astra should have dozed off
like that. After all, she had just learnt that this mage had engineered a
war that had resulted in the death of her mother and her
sisters. He might even have killed at least some of them himself. Maybe
they hadn't been a very close family? Or could Astra be under some
enchantment of Manathus'?
Whatever the case, he decided that he needed Astra's opinion on this. After all, only she could say whether she would accept Manathus as court mage of Aquilaria. Since the mage had chained her up naked in the caves, routed her here via a swamp, and caused the deaths of her family, he thought it rather unlikely that she would. He nudged Astra with his elbow. She awoke with a start, causing a lump of mud to dislodge itself from her thigh and fall to the ground. "Huh?" she said. "Astra, Manathus wants to know if you will agree to his plan."
