"What's in it for you?" Fred asks. "Well, you see, your majesty, long ago, I was the wisest and most powerful mage in both Aquilaria and Allaria. I was so powerful, in fact, that both courts requested my service and I faithfully served both at the same time. However, one day, I was experimenting with some potions trying to reverse the effects of a transformation spell that went awry. Instead, I amplified the spell, and turned myself into a dragon. I went to the court of each country, but neither would accept me in that form. I hid in the caves on the unmarked border between the two countries, vowing my revenge. For almost two hundred years, these countries have been sending their best warriors to kill me, but I killed them all. Until Princess Astra came. She had a different attitude than the other Aquilarians before her, almost a regret that she needed to slay me. She tried her best, and failed miserably, but I saw that sense of regret. I had her chained to the wall naked when you, King Fred, arrived, so that there was no chance that she would try to slay me again." "Yes, I understand that point, but why did you need us?" Fred asked. Manathus continued despite Fred's interruption. "I had heard tales of the legendary Frederigo D'Honaire, a man of intelligence, honor, and courage beyond that of mere mortals. When you were sent to slay me, I knew now that I had both parts of my plan to completely retake my human form. All I needed was a plan to destroy Allaria and Aquilaria. Velus was quite good at coming up with diabolical plans, (sniff) I'm going to miss him." Fred looked confused. This being in front of him was definitely a man, though what he looked like underneath the robes was anyone's guess. "Why do you appear human to us now?" Manathus was nearly done with his story, which was good, because Astra was nearly asleep. "This is but an illusion I have projected of myself. It is said that somewhere in this castle, an Allarian court mage discovered the antidote to the transformation spell. I wish to become once again court mage of Allaria and Aquilaria, and I believe that if you are guided by your honor, and Queen Astra by her compassion, I can restore myself to my rightful place as a court mage and a human being."
