The ill-assorted foursome looked around them. It was very gloomy, but not
completely dark. "Shouldn't it be pitch black?" Velus asked. "How come we
can see?"
Sir Korval pointed upwards. Far above them was a tiny pinprick of light. "When the tunnel collapsed, some of the ceiling must have come down as well," he said. "If there are any tunnels leading away from this region - and we must hope that thare are, or else we will be trapped here - they will no doubt be dark. But luckily I still have my backpack, and there is a glowstone in it." "What's a glowstone?" Fred wanted to know. "A stone that has been enchanted so it glows in the dark," Astra explained, having decided that she was tired of saying "hey". "They are common in the lands south of the Shreken. I had one of my own, till the Dragon took all my possessions." "I've never heard of them," Fred said. "But then we have little truck with magic in Allaria." "In that case, while three of us go one way lit by my stone, no doubt you will want to go another way in darkness," Korval suggested sarcastically. "Don't be silly!" Fred protested. "Isn't it about time we started exploring the lakeside, rather than just bickering?" Velus asked. "We need to find a way out of here." Even though the suggestion had come from a commoner, indeed a peasant, the others had to admit that this made sense. So the naked boy and woman started walking, and the armoured knights started squelching, round the side of the lake. After about ten minutes, they recognised that they had returned to their starting point. That meant that the lake must be a little over half a mile in circumference, but since pi hadn't been discovered yet they did not know its diameter. The lake must be in the centre of a truly enormous cavern, since in the gloom they saw no sign of the walls.
