Fred had not seen another toad since she had become one, and it was jarring and almost sent her into a panic to suddenly be in such close quarters with so many. There were hundreds around the pond, such that she often found herself competing to find a place to sleep at night. Their eyes were large and dark, and Fred found it to be a very upsetting thought that she might appear identical to them, unintelligent eyes and all. She knew she was not like them, and though she had been practically completely alone for a few years now, she felt even more so now, lost among countless toads to which she might as well be one of them, and in most ways was exactly that. But... well, at least she felt a little safer now. And there were so many more insects around here to eat. Survival was, in many ways, much less difficult now. That wasn't to say there were no predators here, but at least there were fewer. She quickly fell into a new rhythm, and though she was sad most of the time, at least she was used to this. For some reason the most disturbing moment for her was when she realized she was becoming able to pick out some of the toads individually. In the beginning, they had all appeared practically identical to her. Was she truly becoming one of them?
