Danger! Fred's toady instincts immediately cried upon seeing the cat. It was so much bigger than she was! Wenda was saying to it, "You'll be a better pet than I've ever had! Everyone knows black cats are bad luck, after all. Don't fret overmuch, Humphrey, I'll feed you sometimes, but you'd best get good at hunting." Could it be that Wenda was okay with the possibility of Rhys, now a cat called Humphrey, eating Fred? If it was true that she thought he'd be more effective at spooking visitors than Fred, then it certainly could. Was it safer just to leave? But she knew this place, and she might have better odds staying than striking off into unknown territory... What if she could signal to him that she, too, had once been human? It might not be too hard. But what about his new feline instincts? She wondered if she'd be able to resist eating a fly if she had an inkling it might have been human once. It would be very hard, especially if she was hungry... Unfortunately, in her musings, she had failed to pay close enough attention to Humphrey's actions, and suddenly she realized that his eyes were on her. His pupils narrowed into slits as he crouched down, and in a desperate panic, she scrambled to her pool, and managed to slip in just before he darted across the grass and grabbed her up in his teeth. Well, that answered that question. She began to venture away from Wenda's hut, seeking a new home, hopefully not too far away - after all, she had better chances near the hut of the witch who had turned her and might one day be found out than she did in the middle of the woods at being restored one day.
