At first Fred had been reluctant to go too deep into the pond, nervous about the idea of doing so, even though she knew that she could stay underwater much longer than the few minutes she'd be able to last as a human. But as time went on, and it became obvious that the further she went, the more options there were for feeding, the more she embraced her toady abilities. There was something strange about this pond, and at first she'd brushed it off as simply the effect of her being so small and vulnerable making it seem much larger and scarier than it otherwise would have. And though that was definitely true, soon she began to wonder if it had some kind of magical cause. It took her a few weeks of infrequent ventures to realize what was going on, but eventually, she saw it with her own bulbous eyes.
