Mariela threw her head back and laughed with her whole body. "You look utterly ridiculous! My dear, I think you win the prize for the ugliest sight I have ever seen." She wiped a tear from her eye. "All right, I'm sufficiently amused. Do come in." She waved a beckoning hand, turned around, and started back inside. Toad-Hannah stood there blankly for a moment, dumbfounded by the turn things had just taken, and trying to somehow shut off all sensation from her throat and tongue area. "I won't invite you twice, girl," came Mariela's voice, and Hannah hastened to follow her inside. There was a small table in the kitchen, which Mariela set for two. "Would you like tea?" she offered, and Hannah opened her now very wide mouth to reply, but Mariela held a finger up. "Never mind, my mistake; toads don't drink tea." "I'm not a toad," Hannah tried to say, but the gigantic bundle in her mouth that was her tongue made the formation of the words impossible. She paused, and tried again. A resounding croak echoed through the kitchen. Mariela smiled. "Now you're getting it. Since you don't want tea, I should offer you something more your speed..." She pointed her index finger at Hannah's teacup and it transformed into an enormous fly. Hannah cast a pleading look at her, but almost involuntarily snapped her head around to stare at the fly as it buzzed around the room. Don't you dare, don't you dare, she silently commanded her tongue with mounting horror, but she had absolutely no control over it as it came out and back in, fast as lightning, and she could feel the huge insect squirming on the way down. Mariela laughed hysterically for a few moments while Hannah dropped to the floor and dry heaved. Finally she regained composure, more or less, and smoothed out her dress. "With the tongue and digestive system of a toad comes the appetite of a toad," she explained, grinning. Hannah, who was still on her hands and knees simultaneously trying not to vomit and hoping she would, was slowly beginning to realize that Mariela had not invited her inside to help her or have a conversation. So why was she here? Mariela answered her question after just a few seconds...
