Hannah tried to voice her immediate and primary concern, but she couldn't form the words "I'm married" anymore than she could any others, and produced another deep croak. Mariela smiled, obviously having no idea what she'd wanted to say, and not caring. "I couldn't agree more. Truth be told, he's very handsome and you're simply ghastly—really, I can barely look at you—but he can't afford to be picky. He ought to be grateful for the company. Even if conversations may be rather one-sided." She smiled again, this time showing her perfect white teeth, and snapped her fingers. They materialized in the middle of a vast swamp. "Oh, Marinus!" Mariela called, and her voice carried. After a few minutes, a pair of green eyes hidden under brown hair peeked out of the murky water before them. "Ah, there you are. This is Marinus. Marinus, this is..." She stopped for a split second, glancing at Hannah as if realizing she didn't know her name. This did not seem to bother her. "Toad Girl. You could just call her Toad though. She doesn't mind. She'll be living in the marshes with you from now on." The merman finally emerged most of his upper body from the water—and he was indeed handsome. And he looked excited. But Hannah's heart already belonged to her dear darling Belboz. "Pleased to meet you, Toad," Marinus said quietly. "You two have fun." Mariela smiled one last time, and vanished. Marinus quickly discovered that Hannah—Toad—could only croak, but he didn't seem to mind. He was no chatterbox, but sometimes it seemed that way, just because he was the only one speaking. Hannah spent her days slugging through the marshes until she grew so exhausted she had to rest, but soon she'd be back at it, desperate to find the end so she could return to Belboz. Every time she saw any sort of insect, try as she might to push down her instincts, her tongue would snake out of its own accord, and catch it. She was disgusted every time by how delicious and juicy they were. Marinus would follow her, obviously determined not to lose his only companion (and she didn't mind his company either), telling her his tale of woe—how he had been orphaned at a young age, found by Mariela, and brought here. After a few days...
