Hannah blinked, and when she opened her eyes, she found herself in a cage. But she was not alone. In other cages that surrounded her sat various freaks such as herself. Predictably, all of these monstrosities had once been people. The bald woman with blue-grey skin and tentacles instead of arms who was floundering in a five-inch puddle of water had once been the fair wife of a carpenter, and terrified of water. The two-headed person with the body of a dog had once been newlyweds who'd taken his beloved pet with them on their honeymoon, but had gotten lost. The impossibly fat woman whose legs weren't even visible had once been a very fit acrobat in a traveling circus. The short man whose skin was completely covered by eyes had once been blind.
Mariela showcased these and several others, saying that she had found them like this. Practitioners of magic were rarely in attendance, but just in case of people being able to sense the lie, she kept them for several weeks, often months, after acquiring them, making sure that their auras were pure, seemingly untarnished by any past spells.
