Diana is roused by a wonderful smell. For a moment she is startled to see where she is, and remembering the events of the previous day doesn't do much to help. She resolves to just follow that smell, because she is starving. She stumbles out of bed and down a flight of stairs, from where she can hear humming. And there stands the woman who looks the way she should, pulling something out of the oven. Diana just stands there, staring at her with a mix of fear and fascination. The woman turns, and smiles on seeing the little girl at the kitchen door. "Good morning, love," she says, and places a loaf of gingerbread on the table. Diana does not return the sentiment. She approaches her lookalike cautiously. The woman sighs without looking at her. "Honey, I'm sorry. That little cauldron explosion... I thought you were okay but it's messed with your memory, hasn't it?" Diana blinks in sudden alarm at this possible scenario. "...What?" "Come here," the woman says, patting the table next to her. "Have some gingerbread. Ask me anything you want." Diana supposes this can't hurt. She approaches the table but doesn't partake in the gingerbread; she's not so quick to eat food given to her by a witch, even if the witch does say she's her mother. "How old am I?" "You turned five last month." "Do I have any brothers or sisters?" "No." "Do I have a dad?" "Your daddy moved away a long time ago." Diana continues to ask a series of questions, each of which is readily answered by the witch. By the end she's terrifyingly uncertain about what is real. She pauses, and asks, "What's my name?" The witch exhales, and her face looks very guilty. "Brigid. Brigid Brockett." Diana swallows, and then looks down in alarm. How long has she been eating gingerbread? Nearly half the loaf is gone!
