Swallowing his fear, Fred continues down the tunnel toward the voice- arming himself just in case. The stench only becomes more potent. Finally the tunnel broadens into a cave. There's only one torch burning on the wall and the light is dim, but he can see the bars of a grimy prison. The pale face of a young girl stares at him through the bars, and behind her is a host of ragged children ranging from 7 years old to 17.
"Who are you?" she asks steadily. Her face is sunken and pinched, her hair oily and limp, but there's something simultaneously challenging and hopeful in her eyes. Despite her haggard appearance, she's obviously strong. "I am Lord Fred Dragon-Slayer," he replies. The other children stir excitedly and the girl's face brightens. "Then it is dead?" He nods. "Yes." She smiles. "Good. Then perhaps you wouldn't mind taking on another foe." "What do you mean?" "We are imprisoned by the wizard Zendar. We need you to dispatch him and set us free."
