Rei’s “Weaving a Story”

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 70977

Lilith

I just wonder why he keeps flinching slightly and doing the "Dutch blik" thing, now. Almost like he keeps seeing something out of the corner of his eye?

Reika

“Something wrong?” I ask the G-man softly as he flinches (almost unnoticeably to all not watching for it) yet again at apparently nothing.

“It’sss something about this place that is familiar,” the secretive man begins, only to bring himself up shortly and glare at me.

“Nothing . . . It’s nothing,” the pale faced male almost snaps at me (equally as quiet as my own voice, but "snapping" all the same), softening his tone at the very end as if trying to reign in frayed nerves.

. . .

"If this 'nothing' turns into 'something that can destroy us all' please let us know before it is upon us?" I ask him, managing to keep most of my annoyance out of my voice. "I know that trust does not come easy for those who work in the shadows and all that . . ."

Understatement the last part if there ever was! The man here drove a hard bargain indeed, forcing my family to have to resort to using arcane (secularized version of the "Contract written in blood" magicks) to be able to work with the man on this quest. Magicks that, if broken, are VERY terrible on the breaker.

I just pray that his splendid "negation" results does not land us into trouble (like we almost had a few dozen times thus far). Granted, big sister is a fantastic mage but she is only ONE person! Let me tell you, we did NOT want to go on without her when she got separated from us.

And even though there was a clear line of succession for leadership, don't you just bet there had been tension and jostling for position all the same with us and the G-man...

"Fair enough," the man in question says, giving me an odd look before continuing. "You are right, trust doess not come easy for me after so long in the shadows.

"Ifff I find that my suspicions are correct you shall all be informed," G-man says solemnly. "I pray that I am wrong, though. And given . . .certain facts that have come to light before me I fear to even utter my suspicions."

Giving them word and life in the process, "jinxing" us.

. . .

Sigh, I REALLY hope that whatever has managed to give a sense of dread to an entity that (successfully!) faced down "my" Commander (no longer!) Akari in his won lair does NOT make itself known to the rest of us! I do dare say it would be a BAD thing.

Maybe even as bad as that one technician back at nerve with a panache for old pre-2nd Impact movies: "Crossing the streams" bad. I've yet to see "Ghostbusters" (never having been interested before my "awakening", since it wasn't related to my Purpose). However, it strikes me as being a BAD thing.

We do NOT need that! We have a planetary population (the peace loving Halkins) to save from Game 3 (a very close approximation of Hell itself).

Yes, while all this is said and down on the side, I only hear with half an ear the discussion that Rei was having with this Dr. Edward Morbius. By the sound of it they had finally gotten to the part the conversation that explains just “what we were” or something to that effect.

Oh, big sister did not just out and out say that it was due to an environmental factor known locally to those places like Terra Prime as magic (as opposed to “magic” having only been found in fantasy tales in worlds like “my” Earth) that caused a rare genetic expression to manifest itself in our . . . .wonderful wings.

. . .

Hrmph.

Anyway, instead of out and out calling the “factor” magic she instead calls it an “eldritch” energy she, me, and Lilith had lead to our “odd” appearance. However, before she could continue things went off on a somewhat . . .odd tangent.

For some reason Morbius here mentioned ancestors from people who’d been unlucky enough to be caught in places like Newport News and other cities both in America and over in Europe being exposed to fallout from nuclear bombs (!?) during the end of his Earth’s version of World War II. Mutations seem to be cropping up even after all this time, but OUR wings (and other oddities in appearance) was something outside of what Dr. Morbius was used to seeing!

. . .

The Americans and Europeans got nuked instead of Japan during WWII? Hm, well again that IS what they talk about when they speak of alternate timelines. History taking a different path than what it did in your world and all that…

But why did the Americans nuke themselves? Nuked themselves and not Japan in the closing days of WWII?! Were they being invaded or…

NO, not right now.

“No . . .it wasn’t nuclear fallout that did this,” big sister sighs, bringing an interesting (but wrong) tangent to a close. “It . . .is a form of . . . .energy that serves as the basis of many of Earth’s myths, legends, and . . .fairytales.”

The last part is somehow emphasized by her wings flexing out slightly, as if wanting to take themselves and their owner into flight in these strange, wonderfully alien green skies.

The meaning is not lost to me and by the looks of it Dr. Morbius as well. Rei is hinting that our winged condition is related to the Western (er. . . .Earth’s Western culture) legends of the Fair Folke. Truth, actually from what I have learned thus far of Terra Prime. Back in the darker, unenlightened days there IF the Fair Folke more often than not abducted newborn human infants with wings than not because a LOT of times various religious authorities (cowards and paranoids, those louts who’d done it) had decreed to put such “abominations” to death.

So seeing Fey folks with feathery wings on their backs after being “initiated” into the Faire Folkes circles wasn’t uncommon…

But that’s by the by but since worlds like Terra Prime seem to somehow be linked through various means to other realms (by dreams and such which give imaginative tale weavers a glimpse), Rei’s not too far off with her weaving of tales.

As it stands, Morbius does catch the reference, but has a hard time (at first) just believing such outrageous statements. After all, though somewhat progressive in his thoughts compared to many of his fellow citizens of the planet (and timeline) he hales from (http:// en.wikipedia .org/wiki /Timeline- 191), this is a bit much to swallow!

At least up until the point where he’s left gaping at the sudden odd light effects that comes from first Rei and then the suddenly transformed (one piece) clothing that Dr. Ritsuko Akagi is now wearing. Then he figures that . . .perhaps while he’ll not YET accept what Rei told him totally, he’ll be . . .more receptive and give the young blue haired girl a benefit of the doubt for now.

After all! If this wasn't some form of smoke and mirrors--and he's seen his fair shair of stage magicians in his time--then perhaps . . . somehow this young woman has tapped into the power of the Krell?!

  1. “A plugsuit Rei?” Ritsuko drawls slightly, looking down at herself in askance. “Any particular reason?”
