Bob stubbornly kept to the stream, refusing to let anything like total
darkness keep him from following the stream to wherever it ends. He
stumbled only a couple times, scraping his knees raw on the ground and
rubbing most of the skin off his left hand when he tried to catch himself
on the cave wall. He was on the verge of turning back and cursing
himself for coming down there in the first place when the cave took
another sharp turn, revealing the unmistakable glow of artificial light
at the end of the tunnel.
Bob wasn't sure why, but he was nervous about finding technology in the middle of wherever he'd wound up. He crept forward-not quite the right word, but at least he was trying not to make any noise the stream wouldn't drown out. As he approached the light he started seeing the outlines of large machines that seemed to be partly submerged. Closer yet, and he could hear ranting in... in bad Hollywood-style German Accent English. What is this, an Indian Jones movie? Bob wondered. "Hurry up, you dumbkoffs! The generators vere supposed to be on hours ago, and you haven't even finished building the sediment collectors!" "Yes, Herr Doctor," about a dozen bored voices responded. "Ach! How am I supposed to create airships when I can't even get competent help to collect the raw materials! Ve must collect several tons uf this light metal if ve vant to create lighter-than-air craft from it, and if ve are caught by zee primitives and zer trained beasts the project and our lives are kaput!"
