Bob hoped that whoever it was who'd said something about following
streams had known what they were talking about... and that they had said
it was a good idea, too. All he knew was that he'd been walking for what
seemed like hours through a cold forest with nothing but the water as a
marker. He wasn't even willing to try drinking from it; it was too
dirty, with silt that never quite managed to fall to the bottom. He knew
something about that was strange, but couldn't bring himself to care.
All he really cared about right now was that he was hungry, tired and
sore from all the walking. "Damn it, Jim, I'm a programmer, not a forest
ranger," he said to the air.
The river took a sudden turn not far in front of where Bob had stopped to pant awhile. It went down at a steeper angle than the ground, disappearing into an odd looking cave. The cave's mouth was wider than the river, so he wouldn't have to wade in if he went that way; not immediately, at least. He wasn't sure he wanted to go underground with no light, but the stream was the only landmark he knew. Bob didn't see many options at the moment: there was the cave, a clearing off to the left and nothing else but trees as far as he could see. He wasn't sure he could face going back the way he'd came, not after all the effort it took to get here in the first place.
