Map Quest

The Black Void - Episode 7841

The office is covered in maps. The ceiling shows an star-map with monsters at its edge, the carpet is a map of the city, the wallpaper is world maps in different projections, while other framed maps--of medieval Europe, the Mughal Empire, the three adventurers' own world, the city of Trenton, NJ--hang on the walls. Right by the door is the very map that led Fred to the Dragon's Caves; he suppresses the urge to spit on it. A sculpture stands in the center of the room--a shifting four-dimensional map of a subway, the Hypertube.

It's also bigger than the building outside, of course. Fred and Astra gasp in awe. Exotica, who's familiar with the basic theory of dimensional transcendentalism if not the practice, grins in wonder. She could spend all day examining this room, but they have a job to take.

The man at the desk is affably nondescript. "Hello," he says, "welcome to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Multiverse, Mapping Division. My name is Twenty-Eight Stan. What can I do for you?"

"Twenty-Eight Stan? That's an interesting name," says Astra.

"The twenty-eighth version of One Stan. Now what are you here for?"

"We're here for the quest," says Fred.

"Oh, the quest." He looks them over for a moment. "OK, you're hired."

"Hmmm? That was quick," says Exotica.

"Well... No one expects it to actually succeed. I mean.." He taps his fingers on the desk. "If you want to, er, not die, you can leave now."

"We've done the impossible before," said Astra. "What is this quest?"

"Well... Kael Varyani, the explorer, who's been gathering information for a map of the Manifold, disappeared some time ago. We'll be sending you to his last known location to search for him."

The three look at each other and nod in unison. "We'll take it," says Exotica.

"If you say so. Just take the elevator over there. Good luck not dying!" He waves nervously.

Fred, Astra, and Exotica walk into the brazen elevator. As the doors close, Twenty-Eight Stan realizes he probably should have told them more, but this isn't supposed to be a long episode.

The elevator lurches a serpentine course, moving up, down, sideways, across the fourth dimension. The three adventurers hold each other tight and try not to throw up. When it comes to a stop, they see:

  1. Our old friend, the Staircase Room.
  2. A version of Terra Prime. ("Oh no," says Exotica)
  3. The Legion of Net.Heroes headquarters,
  4. The starting point of the abandoned Addventure Game 4.
