This all sounded unpleasantly reminiscent to Sarah of the problems that
existed between different cultures and religions in the world that she had
left behind. "Does this agreement, this Peace of Kespara, actually work?"
she asked.
"As far as preventing actual bloodshed, yes it works in most places most of the time. But many humans continue to hate elves, and many elves still hate humans. Memories of past conflicts are longlasting." Sarah realised that an elf travelling with a human might cause problems in some of the villages that they came to, which made Amergin's willingness to befriend her an even kinder act than it had at first seemed. Not wishing to embarrass him, she did not say so, however. Instead she asked: "Are there any other intelligent species - or do I mean races - besides humans and elves?"
