Though the only illumination was provided by the stars, Sara had found
that one of the benefits of being an elf was excellent night vision. What
Amergin saw as only a very faint purple glow seemed quite bright to her.
So she led the way and Amergin followed close behind, confident in her
ability to find a safe route through the trees and undergrowth.
Before long, they heard running water, and were able to use the sound to locate a small stream, where they were able to quench their thirst. "There are what look like mushrooms growing over there," Sara told Amergin, pointing. "But I'm afraid that they might be poisonous toadstools." "If you would being some over here, m'lady, I will examine them." Sara collected several of the fungi and brought them over to Amergin. But even close up, there was insufficient light for his colour vision to work. "Perhaps you would describe their colouring to me, m'lady," he said. "The upper surfaces are a pale yellow, and the gills underneath are dark brown." "Then they are the common mushroom of these parts and are safe to eat. They would be much nicer if we could only cook them, though." "Can't you rub two pieces of wood together or something?" "Alas, m'lady elf. A skilled woodsman might be able to do so, but it is beyond me." So they ate the mushrooms raw. They were actually quite pleasant, and were surprisingly filling.
