Actually it took a while before they realized that the
vast surface below the plane was not part of the ground.
It was simply too big to be anything moveable, and their
first impression was that they were looking down on some
kind of big city of metallic buildings.
The Electra's instruments did not quite agree. First, the
altimeter showed that they were high enough for the trusty
old plane's engines to be gasping for air, and the last
they could remember they had been over the ocean. "It's accelerating," Amelia observed. Fred just nodded. Then the same thought seemed to occur to them both, and they turned as one to see the sun rise behind the plane. Only it wasn't the sun - it was the great fire of whatever it was that propelled the enormous mass below them. With the two vehicles following the same course, and the large one acellerating, it did not take a rocket scientist to figure out that the little plane was going to be engulfed by that vast fire before long.
