"Don't you know that this mere is enchanted and not safe to swim in?", you
hear a male voice shout from the far bank. Alarmed, you look over at the
place from where you heard the sign and see a man, probably in his mid-40s,
with a truly concerned look on his face. "I'm sorry!", you announce
sincerely, "I am but a passing, desperate traveler and didn't know any
better! I shall leave with great haste!" You try to move your legs, but they are numb. You try to kick and kick and finally you launch forward in the water all the way to shore. The man gasps and exclaims, "You've bathed in the Lake of the Mermaid! Any young maiden who enters can never leave! She will always be young and beautiful, but forever trapped with the body of a fish! No one can help you now!" He runs, terrified by your transformation. What?, you think. You look down at yourself and gasp at what you see: the top half of your body is still that of Annabelline, but the bottom half of your body is a sparkling purple fin! You've been transformed into an Annabelline-mermaid. How could your luck get any worse. You stare in shock for what seems like an eternity, unable to believe your rotten luck. As if it weren't bad enough that your gender was changed in the past 24 hours, you are now half fish! The shock of being both transformed into a girl, then a mermaid is just too much to take. After sitting on the shore for a long time, you realize you have to take action. Maybe it's reversible before a certain amount of time passes! You have to try. It's hard for you to move across the sand, since you now lack legs, but you manage to wiggle your way down to the water. If everything you know and expect about mermaids is correct, you ought to be able to move with full freedom underwater and there might be other mermaids that can help help you down there. You take a moment to learn how to work your tail fin and dive down. The feeling is breathtaking! You move underwater with such agility, but don't have any trouble breathing. You approach what looks like an underwater town consisting of small homes and gardens. It is fascinating and breathtaking.
