I am annoyed to be interrupted by the gong. I still have several more
chapters to read, which will presumably cover Naomi's disappearance. They
should also make clear whether she at some point married a nobleman or
whether her being commonly referred to as "Lady Naomi" is merely a mark of
respect.
Evidently I am not so fast a reader as Anorkin expected. I hope that he won't be angry when I tell him that I have not yet quite finished. As I descend the stairs, I continue to mull over what I have read. In particular, I find it uncanny that Naomi, like me, gave birth to twins, whose fate after they were taken from her she was never able to discover; and that, again like me, she spent time as a brothel slave. When I enter the dining room, I see that the table is laid for two. Anorkin is already seated, and my place is set opposite his. He looks up when I enter, and then frowns at me. "I expected you to change for dinner," he says. "Did you not look through the contents of the wardrobe?" "No," I confess. "I was too busy reading." It hadn't occurred to me till now that I am still wearing my creased and dirty travelling clothes.
