I gasp in amazement, feeling a momentary rush of wind, as my well-worn
traveling clothes seem to disintegrate and wisp away, to be replaced
instantaneously by something new which coalesces around me as though drawn
from the air. Looking down, I see my clothes have been replaced with a
rather low-cut silver gown, ending midway between the knee and ankle. The
dress itself is made of fine silk and feels cool against my skin - I don't
need to check to
know that I wear nothing underneath. Fine slippers have also replaced my
sturdy boots. Anorkin grins triumphantly.
"Impressive, is it not? Now, sit and dine with me." he sneers. I wonder if this, along with the shrinking spell earlier, are just overt demonstrations of his power meant to overwhelm and frighten me. I'm quietly thankful, the ensemble isn't that bad, certainly not compared to what I've had to wear in the past. I take my seat and we begin to eat in relative silence. The food is surprisingly good - I wonder if he conjured it as well? Once we've eaten our fill, Anorkin leans back in his chair, eyeing me intently. "So, how did you like your story, Naomi?" "My name's not Naomi, it's..." "Silence!" Anorkin bellows. "I don't care who you claim to be, from this day forward, you ARE Naomi - for you must learn to pass as her, perfectly. Now, the story..." I break down at this point and admit to Anorkin that I didn't finish the book, telling him how far I'd gotten with it, and that I was very impressed by what I'd read so far. I dare not tell him about the similarities between Naomi's life and my own - who knows what conclusion he'd draw from that?
