I feel that I am justified in using a very small portion of the proceeds
from the sale of the coach and horses to buy myself some fresh provisions
and also a compass (which I forgot to purchase when I bought my map), but
almost all of the money goes to the doctor. Then I set out on foot, guided
by the map. The vendor was good enough to warn me that, whilst he believed
it to be reasonably accurate for the area on this side of the border, he
could not guarantee that the details were 100% correct on the Dorian side.
Since I still have a little over a hundred miles to go before reaching the
border, probably around a week's travel, I'm not going to worry about that
just yet.
The map shows me that there are two almost parallel mountain ranges across my path. As soon as I leave Pella, I will start climbing into the foothills of the first. A pass will then take me into a large valley between the two ranges which is almost 50 miles across. Because access is difficult and the soil not very fertile, this is only sparsely inhabited. Then I will come to the second, higher, range that marks the border between the two countries.
