Medical Expenses

The Black Void - Episode 3668

The lone physician in town, although he professes to be far more proficient at treating mining injuries, does what he can for the coachman with his herbs and tinctures. He allows me to sleep in the adjoining room, for which I'm grateful. I don't have enough money left to pay for an inn, unless I was to sell the coach and horses. I won't presume to do that until I know more about the old man's condition. As it is, I've paid for stabling for a week, as well as the doctor's services.

The next three days pass by agonizingly slowly, and I begin to question whether I should even stay here any longer - The coachman hasn't really improved, nor taken a turn for the worse, and remains clinging to life. I've done all that could possibly have been expected of a passenger in such a situation, haven't I? Perhaps I should just leave him in the care of the doctor, and resume my journey south?

Instead, I've waitied here, hoping he will recover. Yet even if he does I'll still be taking my leave of him shortly, since he already stated he wouldn't go farther south than this. I've wandered around the town a bit during the day, having found little of interest - although I did spend what I had remaining on a map of the region.

I decide that I'll wait until the end of the week, and leave then. I don't really owe this man anything more, (I don't even know his name!) yet I still feel guilty. This way, even if he's still comatose, I can sell his horses and coach and give the money to the doctor for his ongoing care.

  1. A couple of days later, the coachman' s condition improves.
  2. A couple of days later, the coachman passes away.
  3. At weeks end, there has been no change in the coachman's condition. I proceed with my plan to sell the horses, then give the money to the doctor. Then, I set out.
