I've never driven a coach before, but fortunately the two horses seem to
be "old hands", and they need the minimum of guidance. The coachman rests
as best he can in the coach's interior. His condition does not improve
during the day, and he slips in and out of consciousness, but at least he
is hanging on to life.
Late on in the day, I see mine workings not far from the road. We must
be approaching Pella.
-
We enter the town, and I spend almost all my remaining money - as well as what the coachman himself has - on medical care for him and stabling for his coach and horses.
-
We enter the town. Medical care for any prolonged ,ength of time is expensive. I not only have to spend my remaining funds but also to sell the coach and horses, in order to raise enough.
-
I make one of my periodic checks on the coachman's condition, and notice that his skin is developing pockmarks. He must have smallpox! Now what do I do? We wouldn't be allowed intp Pella, even if I was prepared to risk spreading the disease.
