Though it is hard to accept that I will never see my children again, once
I have made my decision to make a clean break I find that I feel
considerably better. At last I am free of uncertainty as to what to do for
the best.
Since I intend to travel a good distance, I would have preferred to keep the horse (which has spent the week in the inn's stables), but I need the cash that selling it will bring. My week's wages from the inn is not a large sum, especially since they provided me with free bed and board. In addition to that, I still have the few coins that Baras gave me, but they won't last long. So I am forced to sell the horse to a local dealer, I suspect for less than it's worth. I spend some of the proceeds on a sturdy pair of shoes, some clothes more suited to travelling, a pack, a sleeping bag and some provisions. The rest of the money will go towards coach fares and overnight stays in inns. I hope that I won't have to cover too much of my journey on foot or need to spend the night in the open very often. I have to decide in which direction to head. I want to leave Laralia, and of course I don't want to go anywhere near Artazzia. I have to avoid the area affected by the smallpox outbreak, and I want to steer well clear of the capital, Theras, since there's too great a risk that someone might recognise me. Put all that together, and my options are fairly limited. I decide to head almost due south. Two hundred miles journey in that direction will take me to the land of Doria. Nobody seems to know much about it. Though it means I will be going rather into the unknown, it suggests that there isn't that much intercourse between the two countries, which - since I want to make a clean break - suits me fine.
