Baras doesn't look very happy, but he manages to mutter: "No, of course not."

Salley downs the rest of his drink in one. "I'll take you up to my room, then." He turns to his friends. "Lukas, Ulrich, Goodnight. I'll see you in the morning."

"I'll see you later," I tell Boras, hoping that it will be later this evening rather than in the morning.

Salley arranges for a servant to bring up some pails of hot water for the bath. I enjoy a good long soak. Afterwards the evening takes the form that I had expected. Well, what's one more time after so many?

  2. Some hours later, he says: "I want to keep you. Boras will sadly be found dead on the road after the two of you have apparently been attacked by bandits. What has happened to you will be a mystery."
  3. Some time later, there is a knock at the door. Salley answers it, annoyed at being disturbed. It's his friend Lukas. They have a whispered conversation, then Lukas leaves. "News has just come through," Salley tells me. "Gustav is dead."
