It Could be Worse

The Black Void - Episode 3367

"At least you got back safely," I say.

"Yes, luckily we don't seem to have been spotted," Teran says. "That's the one good thing, I suppose. On the journey back, Moula and I have been discussing what we could do now. We came up with the following four options, though there could be more that we haven't thought of:

"We could go back openly to Theras and get on with our lives. Gustav may think that his position is so strong now that you no longer pose a threat to him, and therefore will leave us unmolested."

I'm not very keen on that idea. Gustav didn't strike me as the forgiving type.

Teran continues: "Or we could try to find someone else in the Ministry of Law who isn't working for Gustav, and who would be brave enough - and powerful enough in the ministry's internal politics - to bring him to trial. That seems to me like something of a long shot. A variant of that would be to try to track down Cornelius, and see if he could help us in some way even though he's no longer with the ministry.

"Or we could stay here indefinitely, at least for long enough for Gustav to call off the search for you. He can't keep people looking out for you indefinitely. If he tries, then they'll just get less and less alert as time goes by. This inn is closer to Theras than is ideal, but it's out of the way.

"Or we could travel to somewhere further afield, maybe even leave the country."

I'm grateful to Teran for saying "we". He seems to have thrown in his lot with me long-term, even though as a mercenary he ought by rights to be off earning his living. Much the same applies to John and even to Moula.

  1. We discuss those options.
  2. "There's another option which might be better than any of those," John says. "We could go to the King. He might be willing to act against Gustav."
