An Audience with the King?

The Black Void - Episode 3373

"The King?!" Moula exclaims. "Have you lost your head, John? What makes you think his Majesty would give the time of day to a couple of runaway whores and their mercenary bodyguards!"

I wince inwardly at Moula openly referring to us as "whores", though that's partly because I know it's the truth, or at least was. While I want to correct her, I find myself nodding in agreement. "On the face of it, it does seem unlikely the King himself would see us." I say.

John grimaces. "I'd considered that, of course. We can't just walk up to the bloody castle gate and knock. We'll require some, ah, assistance. Fortunately, I think I know where we can get it." He sighs heavily. "Though it's the last place I thought I'd ever go for help."

Moula and I return blank stares, but Teran catches on at once. "John, you don't mean to..."

"Yes, it's time I paid a visit to my father - Marquess William Van Alder."

"John, your father's a noble?" I ask.

"Of course, and I was once a knight. Surely I told you where I got the nickname 'Sir' John?"

I nod, blushing in embarrassment over having forgotten that detail. [3204]

He continues: "I haven't spoken to the old man in years...not since he disinherited me. But, just maybe, he can help us get an audience with the King, or at least someone close enough to him to make a difference." I make a mental note to ask John later what happened to him to get him disinherited. It could provide a lot of insight into his character.

We discuss the merits of the various options, and eventually decide:

  1. We agree to go along with John's plan to try and get an audience with the King.
  2. We decide that staying here would be the most prudent course.
  3. We decide to move on, as far from Theras as reasonably possible.
