I'm not happy about letting Moula go (especially as she's been so helpful
with the twins) but her idea does seem to have some merit. So I
reluctantly agree.
The following morning, as Moula prepares to set out, Teran insists on
accompanying her. "Listen, lass, I know how to keep a low profile. I just
want to make sure nothing goes wrong. It's not like Scarlet or the others
at the brothel know me well, since I was only there once. I'll stay out
of sight." he tells me.
I accept his logic, silently thinking he has other reasons for wanting
to accomany Moula. John is frustrated at being left behind, since it was
his idea to begin with, but Moula and Teran insist that someone needs to
stay behind to keep watch over me.
With that, they set off on one of the barges bound for River's Glen,
and I can only watch and wait, hoping they come through. Three days pass
with no word or sign of them. I have my hands full caring for the babies,
which keeps my mind off my nervousness. John begins to come around,
finally talking to me again. On the morning of the fourth day, a week
since I gave birth:
-
Moula and Teran return, and have brought Cornelius. "Gustav and Scarlet have been arrested, along with other leading members of his group. It's safe to return and testify."
-
Moula and Teran return, with grim news. "Gustav has somehow gained influence even in the Ministry of Law sometime in the past 6 months. Cornelius has been removed, and someone loyal to Gustav has been installed in his place."
-
Moula returns alone. "Gustav's men attacked us as soon as we arrived. Teran held them off as long as he could so I could escape. I don't know what became of him!" she cries.
-
Teran returns alone. "Gustav's men attacked us as soon as we arrived. I fought as hard as I could, but Moula was recaptured. I barely made it back alive."
-
There is still no sign of Teran or Moula. John suggests we move on, fearing they've been captured. "We'll leave word with the innkeeper so if they make it back here, they'll know where we've gone."
-
A barge carrying a bunch of Gustav's men arrives. They must have captured Teran and Moula and learned my location from them. Seems my theory about the river men being able to protect us is about to be put to the test.
