A Moment of Decision

John sits down on a chair across from the bed with a heavy sigh, looking at me intently. I stand and make my way over to him. "You're not as drunk as you were letting on, are you?" He nods, confirming my suspicions.

"Just how long have you been working up the nerve to ask me?"

"Several weeks now. Of course, it was impossible before we got you free, but I've been planning on it for quite some time." he says softly.

"I don't really have an excuse to make you wait for my answer then, do I?"

"What I said still stands, you may take as much time as you need. However, now you know that my feelings are true and not the result of inebriation. I would hope, if you feel the same way, you'll not hesitate to tell me."

1. I make my decision. His actions tonight have changed how I feel - I do love him, or at least feel like I'm starting to. That this is also the best decision for me and my child's future seals it. "John, my answer is yes."
2. I make my decision. Despite the heartbreak it will cause him, In my mind I'm still a woman of the 21st Century, and have learned that marrying someone you don't love isn't fair to them, or to yourself. "I'm sorry, John, but I can't."
3. Though I don't yet love him, He's a good friend and I don't want to break his heart or ruin our friendship. I still need time to think it over, so I tell him so.
